What Is Chronic Nasal Obstruction?
Anyone who has had a cold is familiar with the nasal obstruction. However, chronic nasal obstruction is more than an occasional stuffy nose. It’s an often year round condition that can be extremely debilitating – and for good reason.

Chronic nasal obstruction short circuits the important physiologic functions of the nose – warming, humidifying and filtering the air. The impaired breathing resulting from nasal obstruction affects people during the day and at night, contributing to: chronic nasal drainage, a diminished sense of smell, dry mouth, facial or sinus pressure and sleep disorders such as snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

Causes of nasal obstruction

Chronic nasal obstruction can be caused by congential structural abnormalities of or trauma to the cartilages and bones of the nasal passages.
Chronic nasal obstruction can also be caused by rhinitis, inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nasal breathing passages.

Over time, chronic inflammation can lead dysfunction of the inferior nasal turbinates – small, shelf-like, bony structures that protrude into the nasal airway and regulate air flow and participate in other important nasal functions. Once turbinate enlargement becomes chronic, it is irreversible except with surgical intervention.

Chronic inflammation can also lead to the formation of polyps, tags of inflamed tissue which can block the breathing passages and impair the sense of smell.
